Sessions included:

  • Shay McConnon, of People First Limited, who gave powerful, life-changing messages

  • Susan Jackson, Head of Internal Communications at Parcelforce, whol shared how the company has been using storytelling

  • Dr Steven Windmill looked at how to engage diverse audiences

  • The results of the IC.UK Work Foundation survey were revealed for the first time

  • A choice of masterclasses

Two very different ways of tackling diversity came under the spotlight at the CiB conference in Newcastle today with representatives of a top London law firm and the UK military discussing the issues.

Stuart Morrison, internal communications manager with Allen & Overy, told delegates how his company set about encouraging and nurturing youngsters from primary school age, through secondary education and, ultimately, university, so that it could tap into a graduate talent pool that was as diverse as possible.

Day two - The big ideas

Michael Frankenburg, Ogilvy's head of employee engagement and internal communications focused on 'the big idea' - the ideas that internal communicators inherently know and deal with every day - but that external marketers may miss.

In establishing IC's case for more time, thought and investment from the CEO, he highlighted the dangers marketing faces if it focuses only on providing commodity services rather than establishing its value as an 'ideas factory'.

It's tough taking the early morning slot on day two of Conference. Facing a quiet and bleary-eyed group of communicators sure ain't easy - but John Abulafia from the Craft of Communication soon had the audience sitting up straight and paying attention to the visible and aural benefits of high status speaking.
